For Immediate Release: February 8, 2012 EJSHS Jefferson Awards MERRITT ISLAND, FLORIDA – The Edgewood Jr/Sr High School (EJSHS) Jefferson Awards Students in Action program is developed to recognize outstanding students in community service. The selection of the monthly winners is based upon the completion of a significant volunteer work and good character. The following students have been selected as EJSHS Jefferson Awards winners for Fall 2011-2012 school year: · Katelyn Voorhees (September) Voorhees volunteers with various groups including MILA Elementary, Key Club, HOSA, and NHS. Another charity that Katelyn volunteers with is Camp Chance where she has volunteered over 100 hours. Camp Chance provides a fun and educational environment for at-risk children, including those who have been abused, abandoned or neglected or have parents who are in jail or prison.
· Jonathan Elliott (October) Elliott is a 7th grader and volunteers with his church working vacation bible school and wherever he is needed. He also has volunteered over fifteen hours working with patients in Hospice.
· Lucas Baldock (November) Baldock is a senior who volunteers with his church’s Car Care Ministry logging over 200 hours in three years. He assists in making repairs and doing maintenance on cars for low income families or single parents. Lucas also helps teachers at Enterprise Elementary school delivering and organizing supplies and working at the book fairs.
· Hayley Mizell (December) Mizell is a senior who traveled to different states each year renovating buildings for low-income families. She worked with small teams constructing walls, painting, plumbing and yard work. She also volunteers with the House of Hope that helps to feed local families in need. Each of these students have demonstrated great social service and helped to better the community. The Jefferson Award is a nationally recognized organization which was started in 1972 by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Senator Robert Taft, Jr., and Sam Beard. The mission of the Jefferson Awards is to honor Americans who have performed outstanding public service and inspire others to follow. Students In Action is a national youth recognition and reward program, designed to pass the tradition of service and volunteerism on to the next generation of young Americans.
