BPS Teacher Receives High Honor at
2012 Teacher of the Year Roundtable

VIERA, FLORIDA – Brevard’s 2012 Teacher of the Year (TOY), Diane Phillips received one of the state’s highest awards for teachers: the Mary J. Brogan Excellence in Teaching Award while attending the Florida Department of Education/Macy’s Teacher of the Year event held last week.

This honor is given annually to one of the district Teacher of the Year award winners to recognize teachers who through their experiences demonstrate a passion for teaching and a compassion for their students that becomes an inspiration to other teachers.

Phillips, an English teacher from Cocoa High since 2007, was named the BPS TOY on Mar. 10.  During her short tenure, Phillips has won the 2009-2010 Perseverance Commands Success Award and as a parent was the coach for the West Shore Odyssey of the Mind team when they came in first in Brevard County in 2005 and second in 2006.

The award was presented by Chancellor of the State University System of Florida, Frank Brogan. Brogan is the former Florida Commissioner of Education, and husband of the late Mary Brogan.  As he presented the award, Brogan read a letter of recommendation from Cocoa High’s principal; Dr. Stephanie Soliven, that describes the passion and sincerity that Ms. Phillips exudes in her teaching.  In the letter, Soliven states, “Mrs. Phillips is that special teacher that moves her students to achieve beyond expectations or their zip code.”

Phillips earned her bachelor’s degree in communication and journalism from Florida Southern College in Lakeland and holds certifications in English (6-12), Journalism (6-12) and ESOL endorsement for grades K-12.
