Clearlake Students Package Food for the Needy

About 25 students, parents and teachers from Clearlake Middle School in Cocoa, Florida joined more than 550 people at Florida Air Academy in September to package 107,000 bags of food for Second Harvest Food Bank of Brevard.  The packaging event was hosted by Dr. Ross Clevens who heads up the local Face of Change charity.  The volunteers gathered around a dozen tables and swayed to thumping music from a large sound system as they packed the meals. The meals consist of macaroni and cheese and beans and rice — all rich in protein, vitamins and minerals. Each meal costs about 25 cents, which was helped paid for with donations. Clearlake students raised $200 in donations towards the meals. The students had a great time helping others and cannot wait to do it again next year.

As part of Clearlake’s International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programmme, students are encouraged to be a productive member of a global society. The advanced studies choice program provides an academic challenge that encourages students to embrace and understand the connections between traditional subjects and the real world.
